The
Stone Mountain Dataplex was conceived in the post
9/11 era when it became apparent of the need to provide
commercial clients the same security and reliability afforded to
government entities. The task at hand was to find a
location that was centrally located but not in a metropolitan
area, had multiple and ample power and data providers, had as
much natural security as possible, was accessible and
affordable. This formidable list of criteria started a
nationwide search that led to the current location.
In
early 2006, the company purchased the current
location due to the abundant fiber providers already in the
area, the multiple and low cost power providers (4 different
power companies with over 20 separate power plants and power at
approximately 2 cents per KWH), the central
location (within an 8 hour drive of 2/3 of the US population).
During 2006/2007 the company formed the Stone
Mountain Dataplex and hired Smart Business Advisory
(SMART) and worked closely with dozens of highly credentialed
subject matter experts from SMART and several other industry
renowned experts in infrastructure, security,
telecommunications, construction and several other areas of key
importance and developed the current 10 year plan to build the
largest, most secure commercial data center complex in the
world.
Once
the overall development plan was defined, the company spun off Stone Mountain
Dataplex (SMD)
into it's own autonomous entity. SMD proceeded to hire
several key employees as well as Design/Build contractors, EYP
Mission Critical Services (EYP) for technical and tenant
improvement design and JP Morgan Specialty Assets division to
manage the property. SMD also enlisted several leasing
agents such as Prudential Commercial Real Estate, TelAxis and JP
Morgan's Realty division to represent the property.
In early 2008
construction of critical infrastructure as well as the Network
Operations Center (NOC) building and the first seven data center
buildings started. These first seven buildings are 2 story,
12,800 sq ft each (10,000 sq ft of raised floor space) and
built on a solid stone raised plateau just outside of the openings to the
100 million cubic foot interior of the mountain. This
portion of the project is referred to as Phase 1 and represents
approximately 1 percent of the total project.
The other phases of the project include more than 400 data
centers, office buildings, warehouses and support and security
buildings, which will be built out over the next 10 years.
This complex, when completed, will be the civilian equivalent of
an ultra high security military base (similar to the well know
NORAD Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center in
Colorado, but over 20 times
larger) that exceeds every possible
standard in both security and redundancy. It is setting a
new standard and a new advanced Tier level for data centers
world-wide and showing the world you can be secure and green.
Other scheduled
construction includes on site water and sewage treatment plant,
power plant, medical and dental facilities, day care and
cafeteria facilities, emergency housing and considerable
interior and perimeter security and surveillance. As the
various phases continue to be built, SMD will have the ability
to be entirely self sufficient for an indefinite period
including onsite natural gas supply and water supply as well as
satellite uplinks.
